I never really felt like I connected to her, even though there is ample opportunity to really sympathize with her.On the plus side, there is constant action and some very unique details in the world-building. While the world-building in this was fantastic, wonderfully detailed and competently written, the heroine bored me to tears. She had a cookie-cutter feel, like any other urban fantasy heroine out there - tough, sarcastic, dissociated from her romantic life, told in 1st POV, and so on, and so on. It's just not enough to draw me into the rest of the series. I don't care enough about the heroine to bother.
I enjoyed this book from the start. She is an interesting and tough heroine with secrets to hide. The Characters are all interesting and well written. Kate Daniels lives a world with both technology and magic and you never know when one will take over. All types of shapeshifters, vampires and beasties. It grabs your attention and keeps it.
Daniels is a mercenary investigating the mysterious death of her closest friend/family member. I don't know what it was that made me decide to give this book a try, but I suspect it was the sale price. During her search, she steps into the midle of an increasingly likely war between the undead and shapeshifters, each of whom have had members killed recently. Whatever the reason, I am glad I took the chance.Kate Daniels is an intriguing character in an interesting world. Magic and technology control the world in alternating "waves." While at first this was confusing, and there was no effort to explain it (a subject for future novels, I suspect), the reader does come to accept it as part of the way Daniels' world works. Surely the other group must be to blame, so they prepare for a huge and bloody conflict.But is there something else to blame.Ilona Andrews creates a rich fantasy world with her own original spin on some concept which have become a little cliche. By doing so, she breathes life and originality into them.A quick read once you get into it a little, Magic Bites is a fun ride into the world of an emerging author.
Too often authors create impossibly perfect male characters that have no flaws but this is not the case here. They don't easily fall into good and evil characterizations.
Kate is an interesting heroine who doesn't fall into tired cliches. She is strong but not completely fearless and she adheres to her own moral code but she can be [.].
This is a unique addition to the urban fantasy genre. The other characters in the book are really interesting too.
and stubborn. She is also very funny at times, knows her own limitations, and isn't afraid to admit that she is wrong.
I especially liked Curran. Can't wait to read the next installment.
This is the best urban fantasy since Patricia Briggs. Seriously.Great world building, a tough yet likable protagonist with an as yetnot fully understood magical heritage, and the potential for an equallystrong romantic counterpart in the Beast Lord.All of those elements are presented in a tightly written narrative withsmart dialogue; I couldn't ask for more.Sexual Content:Some romantic tension, but no sex. Some non descriptive referencesregarding the villain's behavior.
